Essie gel.setter Top Coat Review

I've been giving my nails a little break with gels and decided to do a review of Essie's newest top coat called gel.setter. I bought it a month or 2 ago and didn't use it "seriously" until now.  I say "seriously" because I used it before but quickly swiped it on my nails on a whim. I actually sat down after I put my son to bed to do it this time.

I put one coat of Essie's Butler Please (search here) and then one coat of gel.setter and let it dry like I would any other top coat. Normally I put 2 coats of nail polish on but after 1 coat of this color, the coverage was good and I didn't want it to look too thick. Here are the week-long (+1 day) results.

Day 1 : July 21

Day 6: July 27
Some minimal chipping and signs of growth

Day 8: July 29
My nails don't look like they had 8 days of a gel manicure but it's definitely better than a regular top coat.
Conclusion: F-YEAH!
For around $10 a bottle this top coat goes on really smooth (not thick at all) and dries quickly without lamps. After 8 days I still have a somewhat respectable paint job left on my nails and it only took about 15 minutes to do. Removal is easy and I didn't have to trek to the nail salon.

Friday's Fab Finds

Kristin's big pimpin' up in NYC at a writer's conference this week, so this week's finds are all mine.

Lululemon Sweat to Sweet Headwrap
I don't do yoga nor do I sweat too much on purpose so it's somewhat ironic I bought this headwrap given its name. Anyway, a week or 2 ago, Lululemon had an online outlet sale and this one was on sale for $9. I got it yesterday and absolutely love it. It's lightweight and will be perfect for when I don't feel like doing my hair workout. It looks super wide in the picture but it can be scrunched down so it's not covering your entire head.

Under Armour Tech T-Shirt
Speaking of sweating, my husband and I play softball and I'm not sure if you've noticed but summer is hot as F. We played the other night when there was a heat warning so we were sweating our you-know-whats off. At the beginning of the season, my husband bought this Under Armour wicking shirt and it keeps him cooler and keeps the sweat at bay than if he were just wearing a plain t-shirt. It comes in a women's version so I may just need to get one for next season. If you're somewhat sporty or know someone who is, pick one of these up to help keep them cool.

Cinema Style Popcorn Tubs
I've really been wanting cute popcorn containers because it's one of my family's go-to snacks, especially since we've been watching movies more and more together. Sticking our hands in a buttery bag is pretty messy, plus my husband and son always hog the bag so I never get a chance to eat any. While I was in Homegoods today, I saw these adorable tubs for $1.99 each. Sold! I can't wait to pop up some popcorn and snack on it while watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for the 8,000th time. If you can't find them at Homegoods/TJ Maxx/Marshalls, you can find them here.

The Bachelorette Season 11 Recap: Men Tell All

Maybe it's just editing and we didn't see a lot of things (other than JJ and Clint - ha) but for some reason more so this season than others it seems like the guys aren't all BFFs. Either way it was a pretty entertaining Men Tell All and we're psyched for the finale ... and Bachelor in Paradise!

What the F's

Ian getting on one knee... "Are you proposing right now?" And then apologizing to his mother? He did seem actually sincere, which was possibly even weirder.

Clint's beard...

JJ's air quotes. And talking about being "intellectually curious" in the hot tub with Clint. Is that code for something?

Why did they have to remind us about Jared's cringe "Love Man" intro? I'd almost forgotten about that since I totally love Jared now! Sidenote: when Jared does get engaged, do you think he'll go to Jared?

Reading the mean tweets was quite possibly overkill. We feel so bad for Kaitlyn and it's not like she hasn't heard this stuff before. What the F, people!

F Yeahs

Ben H definitely got the biggest cheers from the audience. Obvi! And his insight about the "off camera" time was interesting. We want more Ben! #TeamBenforBachelor

The Bachelor in Paradise preview was pretty much the best thing ever. And it's on two times a week!!!! Sunday and Monday. Can we get a big old F YEAH?

Can't believe we're saying this but we 100% agree with Clint's thoughts on the Nick situation.

All of the guy's faces (and Chris Harrison's) when JJ slapped himself. DYING.

Jared's clean shaven look - thank you Chris Harrison for the suggestion!

During the bloopers when Joe ran off to pee, LOL.

Well, next week is the finale "you won't believe" - are you team Shawn or team Nick? And then the following week is Bachelor in Paradise! F yeah!

Friday's Fab Finds

It's been a long F'ing week so excuse the abbreviated version of Fab Finds! This Daniel Tiger meme pretty much sums it up:

On a related note, we're going to meet Daniel in person which we our kids are SUPER excited about! Stay tuned for pics of us enthusiastically hugging Katerina while our kids sit in the stroller most likely screaming. Now for some fab finds:

Lori's picks:

Physician's Formula Custom Eye Enhancing Extreme Shimmer Shadow and Liner & Physician's Formula Custom Eye Enhancing Kohl Kajal Eyeliner Trio

I was eyeing up the Urban Decay Naked3 eyeshadow palette and then saw it was $54 and said F-THAT. While I was in CVS I took a look at the Physician's Formula display and saw this palette and thought it was comparable so I bought it. I got this eyeliner trio too because I needed a new one and thought this was a fun option.

Both were less than $13 each, plus I had a $5 off a cosmetic purchase, and for every $10 you spent on Physician's Formula you got $7 in Extracare bucks back. I ended up paying $22 on both and have $14 ECB to spend in the future, making each essentially $4 each. Not bad!

I hardly wear makeup so I just can't justify spending a lot on it. Actually, even if I did wear it a lot, I still couldn't justify spending a lot on it.

CVS's Physician's Formula Extracare Bucks promotion is running until Sunday so if you can't get there before then and want to give these a try, keep your eyes peeled in upcoming weeks because they usually are either on sale or have an ECB promo. Whatever you do, NEVER pay full price for Physician's Formula products at CVS.

Kristin's picks:

Tasty Organic Banana Split Sandwich Cookies

I'm not one of those people who thinks "oh it's organic! it's totally good for you!" Yes, I realize it's still an F'ing cookie. But if you look at the ingredients on Oreos you might want to call the high fructose corn syrup police. My son saw these in Target and started yelling COOKIES! and I kinda wanted a cookie too, so I thought why not? I have to admit I had low expectations but they were actually really good. If you have an Oreo craving but don't want all the bad stuff, these are non-GMO, no trans fat, no artificial ingredients, no hydrogenated oils, vegan, etc.

Cabana Life rashguards
Fellow pale girls, rashguards are your friend! I bought one from Cabana Life about 2 years ago on Zulily and it's definitely on high rotation in my beach wardrobe. Even if you don't want it for sun protection, they come in really handy during the earlier days of summer when it's sometimes chilly and windy on the beach. And they make you look sporty, even if you're just sitting in a beach chair all day :) Cabana Life currently has 50% off all rashguards with code TREND50 - an amazing deal considering they're normally around $70! I recommend the ruched style like in the picture below (I left mine at my in laws or I'd take a pic). You can make it longer or shorter depending on your comfort level and can even pull it all the way down to make it like a dress. F yeah for safe sunning!

Have a great weekend, F'ers!

Try it Tuesday: No Carb Taco Shells

Carbs are the enemy, but God are they good. If you're a frequent reader, you may know that when I was pregnant I had gestational diabetes, which basically means you can't eat carbs. This is a pregnant person's own personal hell. No ice cream? No chocolate? No endless pasta bowls at the Olive Garden? F-that.

It was really devastating to hear I had GD but looking back on it, it was a blessing in disguise. It really helped me learn how to eat better and how to count my carbs. If you don't know a damn thing about carbs, they are in just about everything. Believe it or not, burritos and wraps have an f-load of carbs. You think you're eating an innocent dinner of some ground turkey or beef on a thin wrap. Nope. There's probably more carbs in that burrito than 4 slices of bread.

The other day I was on Pinterest and saw a recipe for Provolone Taco Shells. Since I'm always on the hunt for low carb options, I pinned it and gave it a try. I think this is my favorite Pinterest find ever! The original recipe can be found here.

I pretty much followed the recipe to a T, except I didn't use parchment paper. This didn't matter and the cheese came off my baking sheet really easily and was really easy to cool off in a taco shell shape.

Finished product!

Sorry - not the best picture but you get the idea (hopefully)

Verdict: F YEAH!
I'm usually a soft taco loving girl, so I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about these. My main beef (pun intended) with hard tacos is that when you bite into them that shit gets everywhere and is just a plain old f-ing mess. These provolone taco shells are very bendy (is that a word?) without cracking. I bit into it and it held up nicely. My only suggestion is to buy packaged provolone since the thickness is pretty much uniform across all brands. If you go get it at the deli you run the risk of the the slices being too thin or too thick. Good luck and enjoy! If you try them let us know what you think.

The Bachelorette Season 11 Recap: Week 9

What the F's

Did all the guys get together and buy out an Irish sweater factory? We love Ben's sweater, tho!

Kaitlyn said she "thinks she's falling in love" with Ben. Pfft, we fell in love with him 3 episodes ago!

We're confused about how Kaitlyn's hair always is kind of half pulled back but only on one side. How does one achieve this? Are there bobby pins back there? Inquiring minds want to know.

Kudos to the Bachelorette stylist for their excellent use of fashion tape because we were cringing and waiting for a nip slip with that red dress. Props to K for pulling that one off!

Pretty much the most awkward five minutes of TV ever when Nick and Shawn stood there silently after the rose ceremony.

Nothing against Utah .... but Utah? What happened to the exotic locations every episode? And Ireland was great but they were there for like three weeks straight...starting to wonder if the budget is hurting.

"She's great at making out." TMI for your mom, perhaps?

We're going to be pissed if she doesn't pick Nick and he, and his poor little sister and mom and 300 other siblings cried again!

The shirt K wore when Shawn first walked in looked pretty much exactly like the shirt Nick was wearing. Coincidence?

F Yeah's

For the love of God, can Ben be the next Bachelor????? Please!?? HE EVEN WORE HIS SEATBELT IN THE REJECTION LIMO. Ben is perfect. Also Lori realized that he kind of looks like DJ Tanner's boyfriend, Steve.

We kind of like Kaitlyn's golf pants. We don't have any desire to golfing but might do it for the outfits...

Good job, ABC intern with the black box. We wouldn't have complained if it slipped a little though. Just sayin.

The Bachelor in Paradise commercial with the raccoon and Clare. So. F'ing. Funny.

Next week is Men Tell All! Drama!

Friday's Fab Finds

It's been a LONG F'ing week (at least for me) so TGIF, my friends. Maybe it was the let down from coming off the long holiday weekend, or the crappy weather here in Philly (I swear it hasn't rained this much in years) but I'm really looking forward to this weekend.

Lori's just wrapping up her vacation, so I'm tackling Friday Finds solo this week. On with the show!

Kristin's picks:

Kate Spade small square stud earrings

I bought these back in April but for some reason have never included them as a Friday Find, which is ridiculous because I've worn them at least once or twice a week since then. You'd think hot pink wouldn't be a very versatile choice but I wear them with EVERYTHING. They're a really good size - not too big, not too small, but large enough to stand out. They're normally $38 but I got these on sale at Nordstrom for about $25. Currently they're full price, so I'd hold out for a markdown because they're often on sale at Nordstrom or in Kate Spade's flash sales on their website.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

It's the most wonderful time of the yeaaaaaaaaar! The Nordstrom anniversary sale preview started this week and it's definitely worth checking out for some amazing deals. You need to be a cardholder to shop the presale this week, but the sale opens to the public on the 17th. Whether you're looking to buy kids' school stuff (they've got plenty of little boys Adidas/Nike/Stride Rite sneakers for around $30, for example) or just shop for yourself, there's loads of bargains. It's also a good idea if you're one of those people who like to Christmas shop in July - no judgement here, but I tend to forget I've bought things if I plan that far ahead. If you're looking for ideas from the sale, I recommend heading to one of my fave blogs, Pinterest Told Me To, for a ton of pictures and links.  Lori and I will be sharing some of the things we bought in upcoming posts! Spoiler alert: Kate Spade glitter studs.

Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars

WHERE HAVE THESE BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? I picked up a box of mint chocolate chip ones at Target this week after spotting them at two different stores recently, and o.m.g. So good! You'd never know they were made out of Greek yogurt and not ice cream, plus they're made from all natural ingredients, gluten free and have 100 calories. Run, don't walk to the store. NOW! I'll be trying more flavors and reporting back.

Have a great weekend! If you spot anything fun in the Anniversary Sale, let us know xo

The Bachelorette Season 11 Recap: Week 8

There wasn't a lot to "F yeah" about this week, other than Ireland being all lovely and charming, as it should be. Shawn, aka Gosling, was just really annoying the entire episode, and if he calls Nick "the other guy" one more time we might throw something at the TV. He's been there for weeks, get over it!

Anyway, the rest of the fantasy suites are up next week. Honestly, kind of looking forward to Bachelor in Paradise to start on August 2 and getting this season over with. Especially if she picks Shawn. #TeamNick4eva

What the F's

Gosling's hair.

Kaitlyn's face when Joe told her he loved her. SO AWKWARD. Then her breaking up with him and him being like "great. cool." Quite possibly one of the most cringe breakups to watch in Bachelor/ette history.

Bummed to say goodbye to Jared :(

If Shawn really did brag about sleeping with some girl a country singer did - gross.

Suggestion from our friend Amy: They need a new name for the fantasy suite. I definitely agree with this one, especially when it's in a jail cell. Ha ha ha, Kaitlyn. I also think they need to do away with the ridiculous key. What kind of hotel uses real keys these days?

Nick's hand up Kaitlyn's extremely short dress on the bed wasn't something we all needed to see. Just sayin' ...

Shawn's fake call to the "front desk." Yeah, like they would really give out Nick's room number to some random!

F Yeahs

Loving Ben on the island date. He won't be one of the final two, but he's awesome. The island ruins weren't half bad either.

The town of Cork looks so cute! Especially the colorful houses. And the local guys were hilarious, and full of CRAIC!

You Go Kaitlyn for giving Gosling a smackdown (yet again). "I'm here to explore other relationships." Because you know, we're on a show called The Bachelorette.

Have to agree with Nick about Irish "bacon." It's ham!! That is NOT bacon, people. Their cozy morning after breakfast seemed really nice and natural, too.

Until next week....xoxo

Make it Monday: Strawberry Shortcake Overnight Oats

Since it's Bachelorette season, we haven't been doing Try it Tuesday (and it's summer, so frankly, we've been like F it! and not really making a lot of new recipes). But we'll be featuring some recipes here and there over the summer until The Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise are over.

So ... a lot of our friends are obsessed with overnight oats. After hearing them talk about this phenomenon for months, I figured I'd finally try it for myself. I saw an article on Buzzfeed talking about overnight oat recipes and the strawberry shortcake one from My Fussy Eater popped out at me. Seemed easy enough!

Ingredients:

12 strawberries
2 cups of oats (I just used regular Quaker oats)
1.5 cups milk
Half cup of plain Greek yogurt
1 TBSP strawberry jam (I added more later for taste)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Steps:

  1. Chop the strawberries into tiny pieces and place them in a large bowl.
  2. Mix in all of the ingredients. Stir it up, then divide into smaller bowls if you want (I used mason jar mugs).
  3. Cover the containers and place them in the fridge for at least an hour before eating, ideally overnight.

I didn't realize that preparing the oats would take as long as it did, since you had to chop up 12 strawberries into little pieces, which took a while. I was expecting to just pour everything in a bowl and shove it in the fridge. And as I might have mentioned in a prior post, I HATE meal prep. I never make anything that's more complicated than throwing a few ingredients in a pan/crockpot or whatever. Ain't nobody got time (or the desire) for that in this house.

So I chopped, and poured the oats in a bowl, but the bowl I used wasn't large enough, and the milk, yogurt and everything else threatened to spill over the sides. Otherwise, it wasn't too complicated but my kitchen looked like a tornado blew through afterward, and at 11 p.m. having to deal with cleaning lumps of oats/milk/yogurt off the counters wasn't exactly thrilling.

I poured the finished product in two mason jar mugs and covered with plastic wrap, then put them in the fridge overnight. When I woke up the next morning I was pretty excited to try them and to have breakfast all ready. But to be honest...I didn't love the overnight oats.

The verdict: F-it!

Maybe I'm the only thirty-something woman in America who isn't obsessed with overnight oats, but I thought the texture was gross and there just wasn't enough flavor for me. The recipe promised it tasted like strawberry ice cream, but I'd love to know what brand of ice cream that is so I can avoid it. I thought maybe I could add more of the strawberry jam for some more flavor, and that did help a bit. But to me, this was just a semi-strawberry-flavored mush. It kind of reminded me of vomit (sorry, but that's all I could think about when I looked at it). I managed to eat about half of a jar and then threw it away, and my son took one bite and spit it back in the jar.

Maybe I tried the wrong recipe? I don't know. I would consider making a different kind of overnight oats, but I have a feeling the texture would be the problem again. I'll just stick with pouring cereal into a bowl for now!

Friday's Fab Finds

Happy 4th of July Weekend, F-er's! We're ready to have some fun in the sun (hopefully) and celebrate with friends and family. As always, we're sharing what we're into this week!

Lori's picks:

Odd Mom Out
One of my friends posted about this show on Facebook and during naptime this week I've been catching up. It's mindless entertainment that is relatable in an outlandish way. It's only half an hour so you can get through an episode in the blink of an eye. It's about a mom who is, well, the odd mom out. It's set in New York City so you can imagine the characters. I love the main character, Jill. She keeps it real and is my spirit animal. She has underwear dance parties and tattoos and is basically as real as they come. It's on Bravo on Monday nights and guaranteed to make you chuckle. Oh and Rose from Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is in it. So get right on top of it, Rose! And watch.

Vera Bradley Ditty Bag
During a mini shopping spree at the Vera Bradley outlet store last year with my birthday discount in my hot little hands, one of the people working there convinced me I needed this little bag. Well, she was right. I did and I didn't even know it at the time. This is great for wet bathing suits, diapers (cloth or disposable) when you're out, or even a makeshift cooler (throw ice in and a few cans of beer juice and boom - instant cooler). The possibilities are actually endless. It's lined with plastic and has a drawstring top so it keeps moisture inside and doesn't get everything else wet. One of its greatest selling points is that it's machine washable so if you have a poopy diaper or it starts getting stinky, just throw it in the washer. If you're not on their mailing list, try contacting them here to see if you can be added. They send out birthday discounts via snail mail every year. This year it was 25% off your entire purchase either in stores, online, or at an outlet store. To get the most bang for your buck use your birthday discount at an outlet store. They have a ton of great things that you don't even know you need. If you don't have an outlet store near you, go to ebates.com and shop verabradley.com through there. They are currently offering 3.0% cash back. If you don't have an ebates account, sign up here. The ditty bags are currently 50% off ($14) so if your birthday isn't coming up anytime soon and you *need* this bag, it makes it a little easier to handle. Let us know if you have one and if you don't and get one, let us know your best use for the ditty bag!

Trader Joe's Spa Face Wash with Tea Tree Oil
Ever since I was pregnant I've used facial products with tea tree oil to keep blemishes at bay. For some reason tea tree oil works well with my skin and really helps with breakouts. I've been using this Trader Joe's Face Wash for a few months and it makes my skin squeaky clean and really helps keep my skin clear. I use it in the shower and when you pump it out it kind of splatters everywhere because it's the consistency of water, so watch your eyes. It foams well when you rub it in between your hands and when you rinse it off, your face will feel really clean. If you have a loved one with an allergy be sure to check the ingredients in this. There's coconut oil in it which could be potentially dangerous for someone with allergies. I forget exactly how much this was and threw out my receipt, but I think it was around $5. Don't hold me to the $5, but it definitely isn't over $10. It lasts for at least a month and I over pump so if you use it a few times a day and use 1 pump, it could potentially last a few months.

Kristin's picks:

First of all I want to update you on last week's post about Crest 3D White toothpaste. It really does work! I would show you a before and after but the closeups of my teeth are kind of creepy - you're going to have to trust me on this one. Ha. Seriously though, I saw a noticeable difference just from brushing twice a day with this toothpaste since last Thursday.

Reebok Skyscape Sneakers
I'm not a sneaker person by any means, but when I'm doing some major walking or just want a more casual look I'll break them out from time to time. I originally saw the ad with Miranda Kerr wearing these last year and thought they looked super cute (who doesn't love hot pink) and since I was going to Disney last spring I got a pair. They're made from a super flexible foam type material that feels like nothing is on your feet, it's hard to explain but they're the weirdest material. And you can machine wash them! For whatever reason I only wore them once or twice since Disney but we went to Washington, D.C. last weekend so I broke them out again. I have to say my feet never hurt until the end of the day when the right shoe started rub against my baby toe a little bit. I think that's more the way my foot is shaped than anything else since the left one held up fine, and I also wasn't wearing socks with them. Since I got these over a year ago they've slightly changed the style and I don't think Reebok offers the hot pink now :( But I would definitely recommend for a super comfortable shoe!

Polar Strawberry Watermelon Seltzer
Lori and I are both big fans of Polar, and she got me hooked on it about 2 years ago. We replaced soda in our house with this a while ago and I've never missed having it - in fact I think soda tastes so sugary and gross, I can't believe I used to drink it all the time. The strawberry watermelon is one of the summer 2015 special flavors, and I was somewhat skeptical about how it would taste, but I definitely liked it. It does kind of taste like what you'd expect a Bath and Body Works lotion or shower gel to taste, as weird as that sounds. That might not seem like the most raving endorsement, but it was still good!

If you're looking for a new beach read, don't forget we've got a giveaway for a copy of The Santangelos by Jackie Collins. You can enter here through July 7.

Have a safe holiday weekend!
